THE RAW VEGETABLE AND FRUIT MARKET HALL OF THE PAST – HALLER YOUTH CENTER OF TODAY

The old raw vegetable and fruit hall, which was waiting to be demolished, is restored and turned into a multi-purpose complex accomodating food and beverage units, theatre and exhibition halls and clothing stores by the Metropolitan Eskisehir Municipality.

Following the restoration works, the facility is put into service under the name Haller Youth Center. The restoration served as a model for similar buildings in the area between the Anadolu University and Haller Youth Center. This endeavor is one of the most beautiful examples showing the revitalization of a structure with new cultural, economic and social functions by preserving the historical structure.

The raw vegetable and fruit market hall was established in the 1930’s and served until the year 1998. The building, which owned an original and historical architecture in Eskisehir’s urban life, was tending to break down until Lord Mayor of Metropolitan Eskisehir Municipality Prof.Dr. Yılmaz Büyükerşen attempted to restore and functionalize the building. The center is put into service of Eskisehir public in the year 2001.

The carrier system of the building is reinforced concrete carcass, the filling is of brick and the roof is made of wood construction. The stony ground and the wood truss in the roof are preserved in their original conditions. In the fronts of the building brick siding, which symbolizes the soil industry leading Eskisehir’s industrial development. 

The Haller Youth Center is serving Eskisehir public and youth with its Tepebasi Stage, exhibition hall, bookstore, cafeteria and restaurants and small business as a modern shopping, culture and arts center.

The Metropolitan Municipality is awarded by the Historical Cities Association for its efforts to restore the old raw vegetable and fruit market hall and to turn it into Haller Youth Center and thus for its contribution to the city’s history.
